Bilingual Language Development and Children with Language Disorders

Throughout my clinical experience, I’ve had concerned parents asking me if it was appropriate to expose their child with a language disorder to more than one language. Oftentimes, a Spanish speaking or bilingual parent may hesitate to expose their child to their native language. They may fear that exposing their child to more than one language could hinder their child’s progress. With a complete understanding of their concerns, I am here to guide and educate families and other professionals on this specific topic. I encourage both parents and professionals to support bilingual language development in children with language disorders. Introducing a second language does not hinder their progress, but rather allows a child to connect with their family's culture and heritage. By encouraging bilingual language development in all children, we create an inclusive environment where children can embrace their unique cultural and linguistic background.
